These guidelines are intended to provide advice on the effectiveand safe treatment of infections commonly presenting in adults andchildren in the primary care setting in Hampshire and the Isle ofWight. The guidelines also promote the use of narrow-spectrumantibiotics in preference to broad-spectrum antibiotics where safeand appropriate. The audience of users is anticipated to be generalpractitioners, GP trainees, GP practice nurses, non-medicalprescribers, paramedics, hospital emergency department staff andcommunity pharmacists.The multi-disciplinary guideline development group consisted ofgeneral practitioners, hospital consultant medical microbiologists,a consultant in HIV / genito-urinary medicine, specialist hospitalmicrobiology / infectious diseases pharmacists, primary care trustand ambulance trust pharmacists and a senior podiatrist acrossSouthampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth.The guidelines are based largely on the Management of InfectionGuidance for Primary Care, published jointly by the HealthProtection Agency and the British Infection Association and theguideline development group gratefully acknowledges the work of DrCliodna McNulty and her colleagues in the HPA and BIA.Recommendations for when antimicrobial treatment is indicated,based upon cited national or international evidence-basedguidelines, have been expanded from the HPA/BIA Guidance, alongwith recommendations and practical advice for taking specimens formicrobiological investigations and interpreting culture andsensitivity laboratory reports. Clinically relevant information oncautions and warnings associated with antimicrobial treatment havealso been expanded from the HPA/BIA Guidance including informationabout risk of Clostridium difficile infection. All statements arefully referenced.

It providesadviceand links to online support that is safe and recommended byotherswho have found it helpful.Mind your head is an app developed by SussexPartnershipFoundation Trust and has had young people heavilyinvolved in theplanning, building and testing of the app.
